Agoda: Top 10 Things to do in Osaka

Three million residents make up Osaka, Japan’s third largest city and definitely one of its most colorful. Visitors are treated to a bustling landscape of action, bright flashing lights, and surprises around most corners. Famous as an electronics center, Osaka also blends in traditional sites and values, making it one of the country’s more pleasing metropolises to visit. Here are a few spots you’ll want to be sure to include on your trip (in alphabetical order):
Eat in Dotonbori
This is the main tourist street in Osaka and for good reason. Seemingly every shop offers food and you could spend days munching until your stomach could take no more. Tsutenkaku Tower is the focal point, offering a central meeting point of sorts. Night brings with it neon lights, photo-happy crowds and an electric pulse in the air. A fun spot day or night!

Gaze up at the Kaiyukan Aquarium
Life under the sea is the draw at this world-class aquarium that packs in the crowds. Located at Tempozan Harbor Village, you’ll see all sorts of underwater creatures swim by as you walk through the aquarium’s glass tunnels. And when you’ve had enough of underwater life, hit up the Tempozan Ferris Wheel next door for sky-high views of the city.

Get cultured at the National Bunraku Theatre
Take in some culture in the form of traditional Japanese puppet-drama or bunraku. Performances typically feature two four-hour halves, so purchasing a ticket for one portion is more than enough puppet-time for most. English audio guides can be rented and are well worth it to help you understand what’s going on and get some bonus insight into the art form.

Explore world cultures at the National Museum of Ethnology
Take a trip through the world’s cultures with exhibits ranging from Bhutanese mandalas, to Japanese parade floats, African barbershop signs, and everything in between. It’s worth taking an audio tour, as there’s not much English signage. The larger Osaka Banpaku-kōen (World Expo Park), which the museum is located in, is also nice for strolling amid its many trees, hills and lakes.

Geek out at Nipponbashi
Known locally as Den Den Town, shoppers come to this lively shopping district to buy electronics, check out the latest cosplay fashions, and marvel at the many game arcades. Pedestrian streets are packed as shoppers buy comics, search for bargains, and sip coffee at cafes. You won’t find a better place to glimpse the neon-lit pulse of Osaka’s geek culture.

Feel farm-fresh at the Open Air Museum of Japanese Farm Houses
And now for something completely different: immerse yourself in the world of Japanese Edo farmhouses. Eleven structures are on show, pieced together from various structures throughout the countryside to showcase traditional Japanese farm life. Windmills, barns, and bamboo groves create a peaceful environment far away from the tourist masses.

Go back in time at Osaka Castle
Without knowing a lot about Japan, many foreigners would not think the country had a castle culture, but it does. Osaka Castle played a major role during the sixteenth century and makes for a nice cultural learning experience. The views from the top are killer as well. The larger park — ranked a top destination by Agoda.com customers — is nice for a stroll, especially during spring when the cherry and plum trees are in full bloom.

Feast on the delicious Okonomiyaki
Osaka’s most famous dish, often referred to as Japanese Pizza, okonomiyaki is super tasty. Sometimes prepared by diners themselves, and other times by the restaurant, this half pancake/half pizza is comprised of batter cooked on a hot plate that is filled with seafood, bonito flakes, and seaweed strips, then topped with mayonnaise and dark, sweet sauces.

Relax at Spa World
Japanese love their onsen, or hot springs, and this place celebrates variations from around the world, in somewhat gaudy fashion. There’s a European zone, which has Roman, Greek and Finn examples, and you’ll find Persian and Balinese varieties in the Asian zone. A hotel, stone spa, salon, and restaurant make up this truly staggering complex of all things hot water.

Soar sky-high at the Umeda Sky Building
Definitely the city’s most unique building, this twin-tower complex has a space-age design that seems to have been brought back from the future. The top five floors are accessed via a glass-covered escalator that hangs above an open section between the two towers. Not for those with weak stomachs! You haven’t seen Osaka until you’ve experienced Umeda in all its glass and steel glory.

Phuket with kids: what beaches are best?

Like it or not, Phuket is often associated closely with its infamous Patong area, one of the most famous party spots in Asia. But thankfully, there is much more to Phuket than Patong. In fact, there are many beach areas that are perfect for children, where the whole family can relax and enjoy the sun, sand, and warm, blue water.
Phuket is a big island, big enough that it does not feel like an island at all. In fact, it’s Thailand’s biggest island, and a province in its own right. There are many towns, roads, attractions, water activities and of course beaches to see and explore. In fact, there are so many that it can be confusing to work out which beach area is the best for a family. Here’s a review of some of the most popular beach areas and what they offer.
Surin
Located 15km north of Patong, Surin Beach is a great choice for families. Trees separate the hotels here from a beautiful stretch of white sand and give the beach a more secluded feel. For those who choose to explore the beach on foot, small Thai-style restaurants and cafes dot the landscape and make for wonderful rest stops. Once you find the perfect spot to lounge, you can rent a chair and umbrella for the day from one of the shops for a small fee. Verdict: With plenty of soft sand, a bounty of food options, and loads to explore, Surin is worth a look.
Kalim
Kalim Beach is just north of Patong, and is a good budget choice that’s just off the main drag. There are not many hotels and resorts in this area so it is not as crowded, but this means that it lacks the endless options for drinking and dining found in Patong. The beach is small, so if a big, beautiful beach is important, this area should not be considered. Verdict: Good for families wanting to dip their toe into the exciting parts of Phuket, but who want an easy way to retreat into a less vibrant area.
Karon
Karon Beach is a beautiful, long, and not-yet overdeveloped beach just south of Patong. Facing the beach is a string of resorts, restaurants and shops on the main road, which kids will love to browse. Karon is the second most popular of Phuket’s beach areas, although it does not feel like it thanks to the beach being so big and the resorts being rather spread out along the main road. It is a great beach for families as everything you need is there, plus the white sand and shallow water are great for little ones. Facilities such as restaurants and shops are quite spread out though, so be prepared for a bit of walking and/or carrying if you’re travelling with young kids. Verdict: Perfect, but be ready to do a bit of walking!
Kata
Kata Beach is a gorgeous palm-lined beach just south of Karon Beach. There is plenty of space to spread out and build sandcastles and the water is safe for young children to splash around in. At the northern end of the beach, there is also some great snorkeling. There are many resorts to choose from in this area. Kata does not get overrun by tourists, but there are enough people around that there is a good array of restaurants and shops. Verdict: a great choice for families who want many of the conveniences of the bigger beaches, but don’t want to be flooded with tourists either.
Nai Harn
Nai Harn Beach, located at the southern end of Phuket, is one of the prettiest beaches on the island, offering some fantastic, blue water. Nai Harn is much smaller and less touristy than other areas, but it’s also a bit of a trek to get to. There are not many resorts near the beach and a relatively low number of restaurants and shops that carry anything but the basics, which should be taken into account when packing for the day. Verdict: a great beach area for a family who wants to get away from the crowds while still being able to pick up some of the basics that kids need to have fun.

Five Great Things to do in London for Free

London may be one of the most expensive cities in the world, but if you’re in the know, a visit to the English capital doesn’t have to be costly at all. There are so many amazing free activities, events and sights in London. You’ll have no problem indulging in the city’s many offerings while sticking to your budget! Even a simple stroll along the South Bank of the Thames rewards you with iconic London sights including the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye and Shakespeare’s Globe Theater.
We’ve compiled a list of five fantastic things to do in London, and all of them at our favorite price – free!
Uncover hidden treasures in London’s markets
Wandering around London’s diverse markets is a great way to get a sense of the city’s edgy and eclectic style. There truly is something for everyone on offer, whether you’re in search of a tasty snack, a vintage coat or an antique clock.
Camden Market is full of alternative, original arts and crafts, as well as unique clothing and accessories, and with its fun, quirky atmosphere, it’s easy to see why Camden Market is London’s fourth most-visited attraction.
Foodies will delight in the vast array of delicious street dishes from around the world available at Borough Market, one of London’s oldest food markets.
For collectors, there is nowhere better than Portobello Road Market, the biggest antiques market in the world, home to almost every kind of collectible and antique imaginable.
Relax in the Royal Parks
Escape from the bustling city to the fresh air of one of London’s many parks. Stroll to the top of Primrose Hill in Regent’s Park for a priceless view of the capital in all its glory. Head to Hyde Park, London’s largest green space, and get active. The park boasts a wide range of activities from boating, horse riding and cycling in the summer, to ice skating in the winter.
But that’s not all, because there’s also Kensington Gardens, Richmond Park, St James’s Park, Greenwich Park, Bushy Park and Green Park, each offering sanctuary from the busy city as well as a range of events to keep the whole family entertained.
Become cultured in the museums and art galleries
London’s museums are some of the best in the world, and entry to the majority of them is completely free! The pick of the bunch has to be the British Museum, with a permanent collection of over eight million exhibits and home to important artefacts including the Parthenon Marbles and the Rosetta Stone. But there are many other fantastic choices, from the fun and interactive Science Museum to the Natural History Museum and its vast collection of ancient, rare and fascinating specimens.
London also has many fantastic art galleries, from the world-renowned National Gallery which houses celebrated works by some of the most influential artists Western Europe has produced, including Renoir, Da Vinci and Van Gogh, to the Tate Modern, where you can explore the unusual world of contemporary and modern art.
Be amazed by the street performers in Covent Garden
All of the street performers in Covent Garden have to pass an audition before they are allowed to perform here, so you know they’re sure to put on a good show. Join the crowds and marvel at the amazing, unusual, funny, crazy and sometimes downright weird talents of the performers, from the stunt artists, mimes and magicians in the West Piazza to the exceptional classical music performances in the South Hall Courtyard.
Covent Garden is also full of quaint cafés and boutiques, and there are an incredible thirteen theaters nearby. Watching the performances is another great way to pass the time before heading to the theater to catch a show.
Watch the Changing of the Guard
The Changing of the Guard is one of London’s most iconic attractions, with the Queen’s Guard decked out in their recognizable black busbies and red tunics. Why not get a unique, up-close view of this traditional ceremony by heading over to St James’s Palace where you can watch the Captain of the Queen’s Guard inspecting half of the Old Guard before following their procession to Buckingham Palace to join with the rest of their corps?
The Changing of the Guards takes place every day during the summer and every other day in the winter, and starts at 11am at St James’s Palace and at 11:30am at Buckingham Palace – but if you’re heading straight to Buckingham Palace, don’t forget to show up early in order to get a good view.

Visiting Taipei’s delicious night markets with kids

Taipei has a well-deserved reputation as one of the best places to eat in the world. Many visitors arrive with an empty stomach and plans to fill it up as quickly as possible — plans that rarely go unfulfilled. But traveling with children presents a challenge: will they enjoy eating strange food in strange places? Thankfully, Taipei’s many food choices present few problems for children. In fact, they may even end up eating more than their parents!
There is an endless variety of locations to eat at around the city: food stalls, restaurants, cafes, dumpling bars, food courts, and more. They are all great, but by far the best places to eat are at Taipei’s fabulous night markets. The best part about these open-air food bazaars is that they have a huge variety of different dishes on offer. Many cost only about $1, which makes this a great way to try a variety of items. They also have a friendly atmosphere, and provide a superb way to interact with the locals.
Parents are sometimes worried how toddlers and young children will cope at a night market, but the fears are usually unfounded. They are perfect for kids. The food is quick and easy, and the kids can see the food so it’s easy for them to choose. Night markets are all full of locals, so tourists rarely feel unsafe.
The only downside is a lack of seating, so having a stroller on hand is a very good idea. English isn’t widely spoken, but with sign language and smiles, it’s easy enough to get by. It might not always be clear what exactly you’re ordering, but nine times out of ten it will taste great.
There are a lot of night markets in Taipei. Here are our top three to try if you have kids in tow.
Shida Night Market
Shida night market is a smaller, more local night market with a huge variety of great food to try. There are also many clothing shops to browse while eating. If the kids get thirsty or need a break, small restaurants and cafes are a great way to sit in comfort while watching the activity outside.
Shida Night Market is easily accessible via the metro at the Taipower Building station. We recommend arriving any time after 5:30pm.
Raohe Night Market
Raohe Night Market is Taipei’s oldest and is definitely one of the best. It is situated on one big, long street that is packed full of food stalls, and has a friendly and relaxed vibe. There’s an endless variety of food to try, and kids love running about trying it all.
This night market is located about 15-minute walk from Houshanpi metro station, and taxis are readily available. We recommend arriving after 6pm.
Shilin Night Market
Shilin Night Market is the largest and most famous night market in Taipei, and — according to some —  the best place in the city to eat. With a large food section and a larger general goods section, it takes newbies a while to figure it out, but it soon becomes clear. Kids will love the activity and energy here — scooters and bikes whiz by (be careful!) and there is shouting, yelling and laughing in all directions. The market is quite spread out, so look at a map before you go to get a rough idea of the layout to avoid walking (or carrying tired kids) more than is necessary. Arrive early, as it gets quite busy as the night goes on. There’s also an area with a roof, which is good to know if it starts raining. Shilin Night Market is located next to Jiantan metro station.

Family travel to the Los Angeles area – What are some of the best places to stay?

Los Angeles, California needs no introduction. It is the home to Hollywood, Disneyland, Universal Studios, beaches and many other attractions that kids are sure to love. These, plus the fact that they are spread out across a large city, means that the hardest thing about planning a trip to LA with a family is deciding where to stay.
To make the task easier, here’s  a list of some the main areas to stay in Los Angeles. Public transportation is generally not very good here, so this is something to take into account when picking a destination if you don’t plan on renting a car.
Downtown LA
The downtown area of Los Angeles is largely a business district, but Chinatown and Little Tokyo are nearby. However, downtown isn’t close to any of the main tourist attractions and much of the downtown area goes quiet at night. But it is a good area for families that want to use public transportation during their stay. The main train station is right downtown while most of the bus and subway routes pass through the area. Otherwise, it’s probably best to look to other areas if you’re trying to keep your kids entertained.
Hollywood
Hollywood is known the world over, and for many visitors it’s an essential stop on a visit to LA. In Hollywood, there’s the Walk of Fame, Universal Studios, TCL Chinese Theatre and the Hollywood sign.  All are easily accessible. Nearby, West Hollywood is also a good place to stay. There are  buses to Hollywood and Santa Monica.  Plus, the Hollywood/Highland subway station makes it easy to get in and out of the area as well.
Beverly Hills
Beverly Hills is just what you imagine it to be – money, money, money at every turn. Home to the famous shopping street of Rodeo Drive, massive celebrity houses, and lovely hotels and restaurants, Beverly Hills is an attractive, safe area for families. It is also quite easy to get to beaches and Hollywood, but not the best option for public transport users overall. This is a good choice for families with their own car who want to stay in a quieter area while still being close to many attractions. And of course, this is not an area to head to if you’re on a budget.
Santa Monica
Santa Monica is a lovely beach area that offers endless rows of shops and restaurants, as well as the family friendly Santa Monica Pier complete with an amusement park. It is very safe and an interesting area to walk around, with plenty for kids to see. There are buses from Santa Monica to other areas, but it is not the best choice if you plan to rely heavily on public transportation. Santa Monica is a good choice for families who want to be near the beach and explore the area they’re staying in rather than heading off to visit attractions across the rest of the city.
Venice Beach
Just south of Santa Monica, Venice Beach is a fabulous place to hang out and people watch. The two-and-a-half mile promenade by the beach is full of shops, restaurants, bars, sporting facilities and interesting people (to say the least). This is a great place for families to enjoy some time together walking, eating, and taking pictures, although it can be unsafe to walk around here at night. It is a great option for families who are stopping over in Los Angeles and want to be close to the airport (LAX), which is just on the other side of Marina Del Rey, the world’s largest man-made small boat harbor.
Anaheim
Anaheim is where to go if you’re in the mood for theme parks. Home to Disneyland, Disney California Adventure Park, and Knott’s Berry Farm, the area is a great base for families who want to hit the roller coasters, get scared in haunted houses, and eat expensive hot dogs. The major drawback is that it’s about an hour south of Hollywood, so it’s best for families who place theme park visits above pictures on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It’s also a good option for families who rent cars and plan to visit San Diego, which is  a couple of hours' drive south.

Brisbane – Five Top Sights

Sydney, Melbourne, and Gold Coast are the cities that come to mind when people think of Australia. But it would be a shame to forget Brisbane! The seaside city of 2.2 million offers plenty to see and do, a relaxed lifestyle, and an abundance of energy. These have combined to make it one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. The city launched its new slogan at the beginning of 2014 — Give me Brisbane any day. After spending any amount of time here, you’ll be sure to agree. If you do decide to visit, make sure to hit up these five spots before heading back home.
City Botanic Gardens
Since Brisbane is known for its lovely subtropical climate, you’re going to want to spend as much time outdoors as possible. A perfect place to enjoy the weather is at the City Botanic Gardens. Dating back to the 1850s, it’s a luscious and fertile 50 acres that is perfect for a lazy picnic. If bringing your own food seems like too much trouble, you can just pop into the City Garden’s café for lunch before you stroll around the grounds. And for those who prefer a night-time wander, they have you covered — the gardens are open 24 hours a day.
Gallery of Modern Art
If you’re a fan of creativity and fresh ideas, a stop at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art is a must. This stylish, new gallery is situated in Stanley Place and looks just like you’d expect a cutting edge art gallery to look — modern and artistic. Inside is just as nice, if not nicer, and the exhibitions cater to everyone’s artistic tastes. Make sure you check out their website (http://www.qagoma.qld.gov.au/) to find out what the latest exhibits are. As a bonus — free Wi-Fi throughout the gallery!
South Bank Parkland
Another great place to enjoy Brisbane’s weather is the South Bank Parklands. Situated on the banks of the Brisbane River, the Parklands boast a diverse range of cafés, restaurants, flora and even a beach. Developed for the World Expo 88 and officially opened in 1992 the Parklands have quickly become a popular location for tourists and locals alike. Depending on when you visit, you might be able to catch one of the many music or art festivals that are held throughout the year. If you happen to visit at dusk, be sure to jump on the Wheel of Brisbane, a 60-meter-tall Ferris wheel – to get a fantastic panoramic view of Brisbane as it starts to shine.
Storey Bridge Adventure Climb
If you’ve done a bit too much relaxing and crave a bit of excitement, head to Storey Bridge to take part in the Adventure Climb for a hit of adrenaline. Storey Bridge is located over the Brisbane River running from Captain Burke Park to the Howard Smith Wharves and provides a heart pounding vantage point with a 360° panorama of Brisbane. The climb takes you across the top of the bridge and offers a dizzying view, so make sure that you’re not afraid to heights! It’s a popular attraction, so it’s probably best to go here and book in advance.
Brisvegas
Okay, Brisvegas isn’t really a place as much as is it a nickname, a reference to the city’s live music scene and the perception that its nightlife is either tacky or superbly entertaining — depending on who you talk to. Head to Fortitude Valley or the West End to find great food, awesome live gigs, and thumping clubs that rival those in any of Australia’s major cities, and in some cases, eclipse them. No matter what your tastes are, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find that Brisbane will exceed your expectations
